Inbound vs Outbound Outreach on Upwork: Which One Should You Focus On?

In our previous teaching, we talked about three things that need to work together if you want to get more clients on Upwork: your profile, your outreach and how you manage the opportunities that come your way.

I also mentioned that there are two main ways opportunities can come to you on Upwork: inbound outreach and outbound outreach.

Today, let us look at the difference, because understanding this can save you a lot of frustration, especially if you are still new to the platform.

What Is Inbound Outreach on Upwork?

Inbound outreach is when the client discovers you instead of you going to look for the client first.

For example, a client searches Upwork for someone with a particular skill, comes across your profile and invites you to apply for their job. A client may also find your profile and contact you directly because what they see matches the type of support they need.

That is inbound.

It sounds great because instead of constantly searching for jobs, opportunities begin coming towards you.

But there is something I need new Upwork users to understand.

If Your Profile Is New, Do Not Sit Down Waiting for Invites

Sometimes you will see someone saying:

“I woke up to three Upwork invitations today.”

Then you check your own account and there is nothing.

Please do not immediately conclude that something is wrong with your profile.

You may simply be at a different stage of your Upwork journey.

An established freelancer may already have completed jobs, earnings, client reviews, a Job Success Score and perhaps a talent badge. Those things give a potential client more information to use when deciding whether to contact that freelancer.

Upwork also states that Job Success Score is one of the signals clients can see and that a strong score can help a freelancer stand out in search and attract invitations.

When you are completely new, you do not have most of that proof yet.

So inbound can happen to a new freelancer, but do not make it your main client acquisition strategy at the beginning.

Your first goal is to start building credibility.

Get your profile properly set up. Start applying for suitable jobs. Work towards getting that first contract, then your first good review, then another successful project.

Over time, your profile begins to carry more evidence that you can actually do what you say you can do.

Your Profile Is What Supports Inbound Outreach

If you want clients to find you, your profile needs to make sense when they arrive.

Imagine a client searches for a Real Estate Virtual Assistant and finds your profile.

Your title says Real Estate VA, but your overview talks generally about being hardworking, your portfolio contains only Canva graphics and there is nothing showing that you understand real estate support.

Why should the client invite you?

Inbound works better when your profile makes your positioning clear.

A potential client should be able to look at your profile and understand what you do, the kind of work you can handle and why you may be relevant to their needs.

Your title, profile overview, skills, portfolio and work history should gradually support the same message.

That is how you build a profile with authority.

What About Boosting Your Profile?

Upwork currently allows eligible freelancers to use Connects to boost their profiles so they can appear more prominently in relevant client searches and recommendations. The boost works like an advertising system, and Upwork charges Connects when a client interacts with the promoted profile.

But I want beginners to be careful here.

Visibility and credibility are not the same thing.

You can pay to increase the visibility of a profile, but boosting does not suddenly give that profile completed jobs, strong reviews or relevant work samples.

So if you are completely new, do not assume:

“I will just boost my profile and clients will start messaging me.”

Boosting can put you in front of more people. It cannot force those people to choose you.

I would rather see a beginner put serious effort into building a strong profile and actively applying for suitable opportunities than depend heavily on profile boosting before they have started building proof.

As your profile becomes stronger, inbound strategies can become more useful.

Upwork also has an Availability Badge, which lets clients see that you are currently available for work. It appears on your profile and in search results, and clients can filter for freelancers who have it turned on. The badge uses Connects while it is active.

If you already have a stronger profile and you are going through a quiet period, features like profile boosting or the Availability Badge are things you can test as part of your inbound strategy.

But again, they should support a good profile, not replace one.

What Is Outbound Outreach on Upwork?

Outbound outreach is the opposite.

Instead of waiting for a client to discover you, you go looking for suitable opportunities yourself.

On Upwork, the most common form of outbound outreach is searching for jobs and sending proposals.

And if you are new, this is where I want most of your attention to go.

You cannot have a new profile with no work history, send one proposal this week, disappear for ten days and then conclude that Upwork is not working for you.

You need consistency.

Upwork uses Connects to submit proposals, and the number required varies depending on the job.

So if you are serious about actively looking for work on the platform, Connects need to be treated as part of that process. You may receive some through Upwork promotions or rewards, but there may also be times when you need to purchase more.

Do not buy Connects simply to throw proposals everywhere, though.

Use them intentionally.

Start With Jobs Where You Have a Better Chance of Being Seen

One strategy I recommend to newer freelancers is paying attention to how much competition a job already has.

When possible, look for suitable jobs that are still showing fewer than five proposals rather than automatically joining a job that already has a large number of applicants.

That does not guarantee you will be hired.

But when you are still trying to get your first few opportunities, reducing unnecessary competition can give your proposal a better chance of being considered.

Upwork itself recommends checking activity on a job before spending Connects because high proposal volume or several ongoing interviews can reduce your chances.

The important word here is still suitable.

Do not apply to a job simply because only three people have applied.

You should still be able to do the work.

Should a Beginner Boost Every Proposal?

No.

Upwork allows freelancers to use additional Connects to boost eligible proposals into prominent positions in a client's proposal list. Boosting is optional; the client still receives your proposal when you apply normally.

So do not develop the habit of thinking:

“If I don't boost, the client won't see me.”

A weak proposal does not become a strong proposal because you spent more Connects on it.

Be strategic.

If you find an opportunity that is an excellent fit and decide the additional visibility is worth the cost, you may choose to boost.

But especially when you are new and managing a limited Connects budget, I would focus first on job selection and proposal quality.

Outbound Outreach Depends Heavily on Your Proposal

This is the part you control.

If you are reaching out to the client first, your proposal has to give them a reason to pay attention to you.

Do not send the same proposal everywhere.

Read the job description.

Understand why the client is hiring.

Then write to that particular need.

This is where the proposal teachings we have already covered in our book become important ( check the hubstore). Your opening should get attention, your proposal should show that you understand the work, and where possible, you should provide relevant evidence that you can handle it.

Personalisation matters even more when your profile is new because you may not yet have ten Upwork reviews doing the convincing for you.

Your proposal has to help close that credibility gap.

So Which One Should You Focus On?

Think about it based on the stage of your profile.

If you are completely new, your focus should be mainly outbound. Set up your profile properly, buy or use your Connects wisely, search consistently for relevant jobs and send personalised proposals. Your immediate objective is to start building your Upwork history.

As you complete jobs and collect good feedback, your profile becomes stronger.

At that stage, outbound does not suddenly become useless. You can continue applying.

But now inbound can begin playing a bigger role too. Clients have more information about you, your profile carries stronger proof, and features such as profile boosting or the Availability Badge may become worth testing when you want additional visibility.

So the progression is not:

Outbound OR inbound.

It is more like:

Start by actively creating opportunities, then build a profile strong enough to attract opportunities too.

That is where you ultimately want to get to.

One Last Thing, Hubstars ⭐

If you are new on Upwork and nobody has invited you yet, please do not use someone else's established profile as the measurement for whether you are doing well.

You are building.

Focus on what your current stage requires.

Make your profile clear. Apply consistently. Target jobs that genuinely match your skills. Personalise your proposals. Work towards that first successful contract and start collecting the proof that will make the next opportunity easier.

And if you already have some Upwork history but things have become quiet, go back and look at both sides of your strategy.

Are you still actively reaching out, and is your profile positioned strongly enough for clients to discover you?

You need both eventually.

But you need to know which one deserves more of your attention right now.
