Lead generation simply means finding useful contact or business information online.

As a Virtual Assistant, this is one of the general skills you should have because many clients may need help finding contacts, emails, business pages, company details, or potential customers.

For example, a client may ask you to find a list of schools, real estate agents, coaches, clinics, companies, or business owners in a particular location.

Your job is to search for the information, check that it is useful, and organise it properly.

If you go on Upwork right now, you will see a lot of jobs on lead generation. In fact, it is one of the beginner-friendly jobs you can start with while you are still learning and building your other VA skills.

The good thing is that you do not always need expensive tools to begin. Some lead generation tasks can even be done with your phone, especially when the client only needs basic business information, social media pages, websites, names, emails, or contact details.

But lead generation is not only useful when you are working for a client.

You also need it for yourself.

At some point in your freelance journey, you may need to look for clients outside freelance platforms. That means you must know how to find business owners, companies, agencies, or brands that may need your service.

So even if you don’t want to offer lead generation as a paid service, you still need the skill for your own growth.

At the basic level, you can start by learning how to search properly on Google, check social media pages, visit company websites, find contact details, and arrange everything in a spreadsheet.

Later, if you enjoy it, you can decide to make lead generation a specialised niche. You can go deeper by focusing on specific industries like real estate (Airbnb VA) as such work also requires searching for properties online.

So in summary, when we say one of the general Virtual Assistant skills you should have is the ability to search for information online, that is part of lead generation.

If you know how to search well, find accurate information, and organise it properly, you already have a strong foundation for lead generation.
