How Client Avatar Helps You Position Yourself and Get Clients

Gift ImasuenL1 · 4 views

Client avatar does not only help you know what to learn.

It also helps you position yourself better.

When you understand the kind of client you want to support, your profile, proposal, and networking become clearer.

Let’s start with proposals.

If you do not understand your client avatar, your proposal may sound too general.

You may write something like:

“I am a hardworking Virtual Assistant and I can help you with your tasks.”

That sentence is not strong enough because it does not speak to a specific client’s need.

But when you understand your client avatar, you can write something more specific.

For example, if you want to support coaches or course creators, you can say:

“I can help you manage your inbox, organise your calendar, respond to student enquiries, upload course materials, and keep your backend organised so you can focus on teaching and serving your clients.”

Can you see the difference?

The second one sounds stronger because it speaks directly to what a coach or course creator may need.

This is why client avatar is important.

It helps you stop sounding general.

It helps you speak directly to the kind of client you want to work with.

Client avatar also helps you outside Upwork.

On Upwork, clients post jobs and you apply.

But outside Upwork, you need to find and connect with potential clients yourself.

If you want to work with coaches, you should be connecting with coaches.

If you want to work with e-commerce brands, you should be connecting with e-commerce business owners.

If you want to work with real estate businesses, you should be connecting with real estate professionals.

If you want to work with agencies, you should be connecting with agency owners, founders, and team leads.

Your network should not be filled only with other freelancers who are also looking for jobs.

You need to connect with people who are likely to need your service.

That is another reason client avatar is important.

It helps you know:

Who to connect with
What kind of content to engage with
What kind of problems to talk about
What kind of jobs to study
What tools to learn
What tasks to practise
How to write your profile
How to write your proposal
How to position yourself clearly

So here is your practical client avatar assignment:

Pick one client group you may want to support.

Examples:

Coaches
Course creators
E-commerce businesses
Real estate businesses
Digital marketing agencies
Consultants
Small business owners

Then answer these questions:

  1. Who are these people or businesses?
  2. What do they sell or offer?
  3. Where do they operate online?
  4. What problems do they usually have?
  5. What tasks can a VA help them with?
  6. What tools do they commonly use?
  7. Which of those tasks can you already do?
  8. Which tasks do you still need to learn?
  9. Where can you find these potential clients online?
  10. How can you start connecting with them?

After answering these questions, create a simple learning checklist.

For example:

Learn Google Calendar
Learn email management
Learn customer support replies
Learn Shopify product upload
Learn Kajabi course upload
Learn ClickUp task management
Learn lead generation research
Learn Canva design

Then tick them off one by one as you learn.

This is how you stop learning anyhow.

This is how you stop feeling overwhelmed by every tool online.

This is how you prepare yourself for the exact kind of clients you want to work with.

Client avatar is not just an assignment.

It is a guide.

It guides your learning.

It guides your profile.

It guides your proposal.

It guides your networking.

It guides your positioning.

So before you say, “I want to learn another tool,” first ask:

Who am I learning this for?

What kind of client will need this?

What task will I use it to perform?

If you can answer those questions, your VA journey will become clearer.

Your final task:

Drop the client group you want to support in the comments and mention one tool you think you may need to learn for them.
