What they really want to know is whether you understand how the system works, who the key players are, and where your role fits into the process.

In this 5-minute lesson, we break down the U.S. healthcare system using a simple framework called the 3Ps:

Providers
These are the doctors, nurses, clinics, hospitals, and healthcare professionals who deliver care. As an Administrative Medical VA, you also support the provider team by helping the clinic run smoothly.

Patients
These are the people receiving care. Every appointment you schedule, every record you update, and every message you handle is ultimately connected to helping patients get the care they need.

Payers
These are the insurance companies and government programmes, such as Medicare and Medicaid, that handle the payment side of healthcare.

Once you understand how providers, patients, and payers connect, you begin to see why your admin role matters so much.

As a Medical VA, you are not just “doing tasks.” You are helping manage the flow between the patient, the clinic, and the payment process. Your work can affect appointments, records, patient communication, documentation, billing, insurance claims, and the overall smooth running of the clinic.

That is why clinics value Medical VAs who understand the system, not just the tools.
